New Hampshire DMV & Registration Fees

  • Municipal permit fee: $18 per $1,000 for the current model year, then $15, $12, $9, $6 and $3 per $1,000 as the car ages, with $3 the floor. It is calculated on the vehicle’s original list price, not what you paid for it, so a car with a $30,000 MSRP costs $540 in its first year and $90 once it is five years old.
  • State registration fee: based on weight and prorated by the month. $2.60 a month up to 3,000 lbs, $3.60 a month from 3,001 to 5,000 lbs, and $4.60 a month from 5,001 to 8,000 lbs.
  • Title fee: $37, made up of a $35 state fee and a $2 municipal agent fee. The state portion rose to $35 on January 1, 2026 as part of the biggest overhaul of New Hampshire motor vehicle fees in over twenty years.
  • City fees. See examples of the city fees in Manchester, NH, here.

New Hampshire Dealership Fees

New Hampshire puts no cap on dealer documentation fees, and it shows. The state requires the fee to be itemized but does not limit it, so this is the single most negotiable line on your paperwork.

Recent surveys of out-the-door quotes put the New Hampshire average at roughly $590, with individual dealers ranging from about $196 to $899. That spread is worth more than most rebates, so ask for the doc fee before you agree on a price, and treat a high one as a reason to get a competing quote.
